Second Yaoundé Convention and Arusha Accords entered into force.

 
22 July 1970

The Additional Protocol was approved.

 
23 July 1970

The agreement regarding the articles of the Additional Protocol that fell under the competence of the European Coal and Steel Community was signed.

 
30 July 1970

The accession negotiations with Denmark, Ireland, Norway and UK started.

 
5 August 1970

Cyprus asked to start  negotiations for an Association Agreement with the European Community.

 
26 October 1970

The first meeting of EU-Turkey Customs Union Joint Committee was held.

 
27 October 1970

The Davignon Report on political cooperation was accepted. As a result, the European Community was going to speak with a single voice on international matters.


19 November 1979

The Association Council approved the Additional Protocol.

 
23 November 1970

The Additional Protocol and the second Financial Protocol that were going to provide Turkey a loan amounting to 220 million Euros for the period 1971-1977 were signed.

 
5 December 1970

The European Community and Malta signed an Association Agreement.

 
22 March 1971

The Council approved the Werner Plan that aims to ensure the coordination of Member States’ economic policies. Member States had to harmonize their budget policies and  take all the necessary measures in order to prevent the fluctuation among their currencies.

 
1 April 1971

The Association Agreement signed between Malta and the European Community entered into force.

 
5 July 1971

The Additional Protocol was approved by the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

 
22 July 1971

The Senate approved the Additional Protocol.

 
27 July 1971

Until the Additional Protocol was going to be approved by the Parliaments of Member States, the Interim Agreement which was monitorin the commitments was signed.  

 
1 September 1971

The Interim Agreement entered into force.

 
12 November 1971

The European Community postponed the inclusion of Turkey in the Generalized System of Preferences.

 
13 January 1972

The negotiations between Turkey and the European Community started.Their goal was to ensure that the Association Agreement was going to be accepted by future Member States.

 
22 January 1972

Denmark, Ireland, UK and Norway signed an Association Agreement with the European Community.

 
26 April 1972

Turkey gave a Memorandum to the European Community claiming for more concessions and more flexibility for some of the articles related to the Additional Protocol which has negative impact on Turkey.

 
20 July 1972

The Association Council extended the Interim Agreement’s term for a year since it was supposed to expire on the 1st September 1972.

 
26 September 1972

Norway rejected membership to the European Community in a referendum.

 
19 October 1972

During the Summit in Paris, new policy areas (regional, environmental, social, energy and industrial policies) under the competence of the European Community were determined. It was decided that the Economic and Monetary Union were going to be accomplished by 1980.(19-20 October 1972)

 
19 December 1972

The Association Agreement between Cyprus and the European Community came into force.

 
1 January 1973

The Additional Protocol entered into force. The first customs reduction was realized.  

UK, Ireland and Denmark became members of the European Community.

1 June 1973

The Association Agreement signed between the European Community and Cyprus came into force.

 
30 June 1973

UK, Ireland and Denmark signed the Additional Protocol to the Association Agreement between the European Economic Community and Turkey.

 
14 December 1973

After the energy crisis in 1973, it was decided in Copenhagen that energy policy was going to be under the competency of the European Community.(14-15 December)

 
1 January 1974

The Additional Protocol entered into force.


25 June 1974

The newly established Ecevit Government aimed to revise the relations with the European Community.

 
14 July 1974

During Turkey-EC Association Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Turan Güneş mentioned Ecevit government’s decision to revise its relation with the European Community.

 
16 July 1974

After the coup d’Etat in Cyprus, Member States of the European Community adopted a common position and they declared they supported the unity and independence of Cyprus.

 
20 July 1974

Turkey’s intervention into Cyprus as a guarantor state, called as the ‘Cyprus Peace Operation" took place.

 
24 July 1974

After the declaration of ceasefire in Cyprus, the Council of Ministers called out for the return of a constitutional order on the island.

 
16 September 1974

After the interruption of Geneva Negotiations, EEC member countries declared that they respected Cyprus’s unity and invited both sides to launch negotiations again.

 
22 November 1974

 After the return of Greece to a democratic system, the European Community - Greece Association Committee gathered for the first time.

 
9 December 1974

At the Summit held in Paris, the Heads of State or Government agreed to meet regularly – three times a year- as the European Council. It was also  agreed that the European Regional Development Fund was going to be established and that direct elections were going to be held for the European Parliament. (9-10 December 1974)

 
28 February 1975

The European Community and 46 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries signed the Lomé Convention that replaced the Yaoundé  Convention. This new Convention envisaged fiscal cooperation and ensured free access of goods from ACP countries to the Common market.

 
10 March 1975

The first European Council meeting was held in Dublin and Member States approved a declaration regarding the European Security and Cooperation Conference. (10-11 March 1975)

 
18 March 1975

The Council established the European Regional Development Fund.

 
21 April 1975

EC-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee published a communication emphasizing that a solution could  be found regarding the issues related to Cyprus and the Aegean  only if both Greece and Turkey participated in the negotiations. (21-25 April 1975)

 
24 April 1975

The European Parliament approved the communication emphasizing that a solution could  be found in the issues related to Cyprus and the Aegean if only Greece and Turkey participated in the negotiations.

 
11 May 1975

An Agreement between the European Community and Israel covering trade and cooperation issues was signed in Brussels.

 
12 June 1975

Greece applied for EC membership.

 
15 July 1975

EEC and Mexico signed a trade agreement.

 
22 July 1975

A Treaty establishing a Court of Auditors was signed.


16 September 1975

Official relations were established between the European Community and China.

 
1 December 1975

The European Council, gathered in Paris and  decided to hold direct elections for the European Parliament starting from 1978. (1-2 December 1975)

 
1 January 1976

In accordance with the commitments under the Additional Protocol, Turkey reduced its customs duties and harmonized its consolidated list.

 
9 February 1976

Council accepted Greece’s membership application.

 
4 March 1976

Two protocols were signed with Malta.

 
1 April 1976

Lomé Convention entered into force.

 
25 April 1976

The European Economic Community signed cooperation agreements with Maghreb Countries. (25-26 April 1976)

 
1 June 1976

The European Economic Community signed a commercial treaty with Pakistan.


6 July 1976

The European Economic Community and Canada signed a framework agreement to enhance economic and trade cooperation.

 
27 July 1976

The European Community launched official accession negotiations with Greece.

 
13 September 1976

The Community signed Barcelona Convention that aimed at protecting the Mediterranean from the pollution.

 
3 November 1976

Council decided to start a common fishing policy and to expand the fishing areas to North Atlantic and North Sea to 200 miles by the 1st January 1977.

EC-Turkey Parliamentary Committee took an advisory decision to adopt gradual free movement among employees between Turkey and member countries. (6-9 November 1976)

 
25 December 1976

Turkey adopted a unilateral decision to freeze its commitments regarding Article 60 of the Additional Protocol.


1 January 1976

Fishing area was increased to 20 miles in the North Sea and Atlantic.

 
18 January 1977

The European Community signed a Cooperation Agreement with Mashrek Countries (Egypt, Jordan, Syria).

Portugal applied for EC membership.
 
5 April 1977

The European Parliament, Council and the Commission signed a declaration for the respect of fundamental rights.

 
3 May 1977

The European Community and Lebanon signed a Cooperation Agreement.

 
12 May 1977

Third financial Protocol was signed for the period of 1979-1982. It provided 310 million Euro credit for Turkey.


17 May 1977

The Council confirmed sixth directive for value added tax.

 
15 June 1977

The Commission prepared a proposal to finance structural investments following borrowing mechanism.

 
1 July 1977

New agriculture concessions were made to Turkey by the European Community.

Denmark, Ireland and UK started to implement the common customs taxes practices

 
28 July 1977

Spain applied for EC membership.

 
30 October 1977

Third financial protocol was completed between Turkey and EC.

 
3 April 1978

A trade treaty was signed between China and the Community: Its was foreseen that the agreement would enter into force on the 1st of June.

 
7 April 1978

In Copenhagen, the European Council decided that the first direct elections for the European Parliament would be held on the 7th  and 10th of June 1979. (7-8 April 1978)

19 May 1978

The European Commission reviewed Portugal’s candidacy and issued a favorable opinion.

6 June 1978

The Council launched membership negotiations with Portugal.

 

 
6 July 1978

In Bremen, the European Council agreed on a common strategy for economic growth with the aim to decrease unemployment. They prepared a plan called European Monetary System-EMS.(6-7 July 1978)

26 September 1978

Council confirmed cooperation agreements with Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Portugal and Malta.

4 October 1978

Turkey froze its responsibilities regarding its five year term plan and it requested an aid of 8 billion dollars.(4-11 October 1978)

 
29 October 1978

The Commission gave a favorable opinion regarding Spain’s candidacy.

 
5 February 1979

The European Community and Spain launched accession negotiations.

 
13 March 1979

The European Monetary System was established.

 
1 May 1979

The Third Financial Protocol entered into force.

 
8 May 1979

The European Commission offered to restart the accession relations with Turkey.

21 May 1979

In its eply to Turkey, the Council accepted the transition process but refused most of the other requests.

 
7 June 1979

The first direct elections were held for the European Parliament.(7-10 June 1979)

28 June 1979

The Greek Parliament approved the Accession Treaty.

31 October 1979

The Second Lomé Convention was signed.

17 December 1979

The Community signed agreements concluded during the Tokyo Round  within the framework of GATT.

 
28 December 1979

Demirel government replacing Ecevit government announced that it wanted to improve its relation with the European Community. It also withdrew its request to freeze its obligations deriving from the Additional Protocol.
