9 May 1950
 
French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman made a declaration suggesting that France, the Federal Germany and other European states should gather their coal and steel resources under a High Authority.
 
 
 
18 April 1951
 
France, the Federal Germany, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg signed the Treaty of Paris establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).
 
 
27 May 1952
 
The “Six” signed the Treaty of the European Defense Community (EDC) in Paris.
 
 
27 July 1952
 
 
The ECSC Treaty entered into force.
 
30 August 1954
 
French National Assembly rejected the Treaty of the European Defense Community.
 
 
20 October 1954
 
 
Western European Union (WEU) was established.
 
1 June 1955
 
 
The Foreign Ministers of the “Six” met in Messina (Italy) and agreed to pursue further the economic integration process. (1-2 June 1955)
 
 
 
29 May 1956
 
At the conference held in Venice, the Foreign Ministers of the “Six” decided to open intergovernmental negotiations with the aims of establishing the European Economic Community and Atomic Energy Community.
 
 
25 March 1957
 
The “Six” signed the Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM).
 
 
1 January 1958
 
The Treaty of Rome entered into force. The Commission for the EEC and EURATOM was established in Brussels.
 
 
19 March 1958
 
Robert Schuman was elected as the President of the European Parliamentary Assembly.
 
 
 
3 July 1958
 
 
The basis Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was laid down in a conference held in Stresa (Italy). (3-11 July 1958)
 
 
1 January 1959
 
 
The EEC started to gradually abolish its customs duties within EEC.
 
8 June 1959
 
Greece applied for an Association Agreement with the EEC.
 
 
31 July 1959
 
 
Turkey applied for an Association Agreement with the EEC.
 
11 September 1959
 
 
EEC Ministerial Council accepted Greece and Turkey association membership applications.
 
 
28 September 1959
 
The negotiations for the association of Turkey to the EEC started. (28-30 September 1959)
 
 
November 1959
