IKV PRESS RELEASE: FIRST PROGRESS REPORT ON VISA LIBERALISATION ROADMAP FOR TURKISH CITIZENS IS PUBLISHED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

The European Commission published first report on progress by Turkey in fulfilling the requirements of its visa liberalisation roadmap on 20 October 2014. Publication of first report represents the first critical juncture in visa liberalisation dialogue for Turkish citizens which became official with the signing of Readmission Agreement between Turkey and EU on 16 December 2013.

WHY COMMISSION’S 17TH PROGRESS REPORT FOR TURKEY IS DIFFERENT FROM THE PREVIOUS REPORT?

The European Commission published 2014 Progress Report for Turkey on 8 October 2014. Together with 80 pages long latest Progress Report, European Commission has published 1786 pages assessing the developments in Turkey for accession to the EU since the first Report in 1998. In other words, European Commission has published Progress Reports for Turkey for more than 6.5 times as Lisbon Treaty when the page length is taken into account.

EU-TURKEY READMISSION AGREEMENT ENTERED INTO FORCE

The EU-Turkey Readmission Agreement, signed on 16th December 2013, came into force on 1st October 2014. It marks an important step towards a visa liberalisation with Turkey, since the Agreement is part of the Roadmap for a visa-free regime.

 ITALY TOOK OVER THE PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU...

On the 1st of July 2014, Italy took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union from Greece for a 12th time in the EU history.The program and priorities of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the EU put a major emphasis on the economic growth, reinvigorating the European economy and employment prospects, fully exercising the citizenship rights and promoting a stronger role for Europe in a rapidly changing international arena.

 THE CHAPTER FOR REGIONAL POLICY AND COORDINATION OF STRUCTUR...

At the Intergovernmental Accession Conference that took place on the 5th November 2013 in Brussels, the European Union decided to open Chapter 22  (Regional Policy and Coordination of Structural Instruments) to negotiations with Turkey.
